One thing you don’t realize until you go somewhere else is how many American cars there are in Metro Detroit. I decided to see what the split was between American and foreign cars. I attended UM Dearborn for two years and in October 2014, I recorded the model of each car in the parking lots: 281 models and 2012 cars in total.
As expected, the Big Three dominate with 68% market share.
I found some data online on market share across the US to compare with what I recorded. The US on average is actually only 45% American cars. For every 100 cars, 23 of them are American just because they’re in Metro Detroit.
Ford has a 9% higher share than usual partly because Ford’s headquarters are in Dearborn.
There are many more cars at UM Dearborn than the national average as expected, since most students won’t need an SUV or truck.
9 of the 10 most popular vehicles at UM Dearborn were cars.
Only 4 of the top 10 sellers in America are cars. This goes back to the pie charts showing that cars are more popular at UM Dearborn compared to the nation.
Here are models of cars grouped by some of the manufacturers.
I also grouped brands by parent company.
